Derrida, the man who initially defined the concept, didn't merely break down the object of deconstruction to its constituent parts, but also its motivations. That is a bit different. The notion is everything we do, think, say, invent, or construct contains hidden messages. The things themselves are metaphors for core messages. Perhaps for our individual worldviews.

My question is what have been the results of dissecting things to not just constituent parts but motivations? Once we've killed, dissected, and claimed to understand anything, how do we then put the lifeless pieces back together so the thing may live again?

I first asked that question in a theater class in 1980, after the class deconstructed a play by Tom Stoppard. The instructor looked at me and said, "I don't think the class is ready for that question yet."

Thirty years later, it seems the class is still not. Or, is it?

The learning that all systems have core working features and then, usually, extended features that have been added to fine tune and/or corrupt the original system's perceived flaws. Plus it brings about the understand of how a system is assembled. Sometimes there is an order to the elements in the system and one may need to be established before another can be added. Or, if you are trying to design a new system or to reinvent an old one, you can simply peel away the corruptions (which are inefficient) and start again with the beginning design. Basically deconstruction gives a bird eye's view of the system pieces, not unlike a mechanic would look at an engine, so it is easier to find the problems and rebuild or redesign the engine to function.

It just doesn't get any geekier than this :)

As a person often accused of rampant negativity--I see it as a tool. A tool to be used with discretion of course but a tool no less. When asked to accomplish things I always look at the system which is, or needs to be, designed to make it happen. By deconstructing (taking apart and criticizing) elements in the system I can learn a lot about key errors that can impede my success and design around those errors. But granted I am sure there are other systematic approaches. I don't see negatives as some harmful and evil and always purposely designed. I see negatives as a corruption in a system which, generally, is done to restrict the value of that system to special interest(s) rather than all. Of course this makes me a geeky brain but to deconstruct can be useful when not used for a private personal political agenda.

I think more to the point is any existence based on the corporate structure, will not be governed by a democratic process. The question, "Will the aristocracies govern?", is mute. I wonder about Doug Bruce. Might he fit into the same category? From what I've read over the years, I gather that he's a Californian who was a disciple there of Howard Jarvis, who successfully promoted Proposition 13. As I understand it, that was a tax limitation measure that prevented California from raising revenues through new or increased taxes without popular vote or a supermajority of the Assembly approving.

The news has been full of California's problems since then, and especially in recent months, as not even the "Terminator" could terminate the impass without compromise on new taxes and spending cuts by the Republicans who had just voted NO on taxes until the very last minute.

Apparently, Bruce came to Colorado determined to implant an even more draconian tax limitation measure in our Constitution, and what followed was TABOR. The voters in 1992 were sold a lemon by Bruce, covered in the sweet chocolate of being able to control any prospect of unwise spending by elected officials, perhaps, but sour nonetheless.

Before long, local governments of various sizes in various parts of Colorado began to see how TABOR impacted their towns and cities and school systems, because as economic factors changed, they were unable to adapt to the mutually exclusive requirements to balance annual budgets and not raise taxes except through an election, an additional expense, delay and uncertainty which they could not afford. They began to hold elections instead to "de-Bruce," to obtain voter approval for restoring representative government to those towns and cities.

These elections not only returned the power to tax and spend to the legislative bodies which represented the citizens, as intended by our Founding Fathers, but enabled those representatives to set aside funds during good economic times, rather than being forced to return unspent funds to the residents. Keeping moneys for a "rainy day" proved to be popular with the voters.

The news has been full of Doug Bruce over the years, from allegations of his being a slumlord in Denver involved in various lawsuits, to kicking a news photographer, and he has both run for and been appointed to elective office in El Paso County. Most recently, he was defeated in the 2008 Republican Primary for state representative, so in one respect, a person might say the the Colorado General Assembly has been "de-Bruced."

But the state legislature, and by extension, all Coloradans are still being held hostage by Doug Bruce. Colorado is facing mandated reductions and even eliminations of essential state-funded programs because the poor economy here and across the nation has caused a reduction of revenues collected from existing tax measures. Our state government, like various local governments which have not yet de-Bruced, has had to raise fees, which are not limited by TABOR.

So, here we are, with Colorado being ranked at or near the bottom of the 50 states in support of such things as higher education, nutrition and health care, being forced to close prisons and not open some which had been scheduled, laying off law enforcement, not funding clean drinking water systems, unable to repair roads and bridges, let alone build new transportation systems, including mass transit, where needed, because the money is not available. Meanwhile the public's needs continue and grow.

Will the people of Colrado demand that state government be de-Bruced? Will the Governor or some member of the General Assembly sound the alarm and rally the voters for a needed reform? From what I've observed, despite the urgings of the Denver Post, it is unlikely, because most politicians believe that doing so would cause the voters to throw them out at the next election.

So there you have it, not a Profile in Courage to be found. We who love Colorado are forced to watch our state deteriorate, and to hope that "tomorrow is a brighter day."
